I'm trying to create a shade/roll up button for a window manager theme I'm using. How do you create an image like the one pictured? I'm familiar with gimp but I'm not familiar with the techniques to make word art like this.

What you need to do is a combination of gradient and drop shadow maybe with emboss. For instructions please see this question: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/7366/… – Ryan Oct 15 '12 at 1:51
