I'm designing layout for a social networking site, should I use bright colors with low contrast or darker colors with more contrast ?

Doesn't that depend on the targeted user base? If it's for kids you'd use one, for morose teenagers another, and so on. – Emre Dec 30 '12 at 1:34

You should go for light colors. It makes your websites more readable and gives less strain to your eyes.Go For light and warm colors If you want your visitors to spend more time on your sites.

Check out facebook,Google Plus.. They all have light colors .

The theme of your social networking sites depends upon what type of social networking you offers. If its music, video or Image oriented like myspace I guess a dark theme would be better to make your art stand out.
