I am using Photoshop CS5 extended.

When I click on 3D > Repoussé > Text Layer I am asked first to rasterize the layer. After clicking yes, my PC slows down. Everything stops working because of heavy load. After some time, 10-15 seconds, I get an error message:

"could not complete the Text layer command because there is not enough memory (RAM)."

I have 3GB RAM, enough to perform any heavy operation, but after clicking on Repoussé, my PC gets slow. What is problem here? And how to overcome it?

Probably a GPU driver problem. Usually the first thing to do is update your drivers for the graphics card. The out of memory error is probably just a runaway process. It may also have something to do with the text or the typeface. You can test this by limiting the type to one character and altering the typeface and see if the program fails to crash. – horatio Jan 3 at 17:06
You've not provided enough information. How much RAM does your video card have? How large is the document you are working on (w x h and PPI)? Photoshop's 3D tools are among the most system intensive tools in the application. – Scott Jan 4 at 12:23
