I want to redesign a logo for a local roller derby team. The original logo is really good but I want to make something new and fresh that the roller girls would be proud of. Where should I start?

As it stands, you're not giving us anything to go on. How about an image, for starters? And add to your question why you want to redesign it, since you say the existing one is "really good." – Alan Gilbertson Jul 18 '11 at 15:44

"The original logo is really good"

I'd start by asking yourself why you want to redesign a really good logo.

Other than that, where one usually starts is brainstorming with a pencil and pad of paper.
