I'm looking for quality 16x16 pixel icons for use in general web applications, that cover common web app concepts like users, links, images, tools, etc. They can be free or paid for, but must be available for commercial use. I'm lookin for something along the lines of WordPress's icons:

Guidelines:

  • Must be pixel-based, 16x16 size. No vector conversions.
  • I'm looking for specific sets, not icon search sites. Don't send me to iconfinder.
  • I'm looking for results from the experts on this site who have experience with this stuff, not from Google. Don't even try it.

What do you mean you're "looking for specific sets, not icon search sites"; you mean we should suggest a set that will fit your current project? Or a magic bullet that would fit every project? Or do you mean we should crowdsource an icon selling & searching site like GraphicRiver's Icon section for you instead of pointing you to such a site? – koiyu Dec 10 '11 at 17:17

I've used icons from Medialoot in web design projects before. Never used any 16px sets, but I see they have a couple sets available, commercial license included:

Check http://openiconlibrary.sourceforge.net/ for comercial use and public domain icons.

I'm not sure how your site looks or if these will match, but I've used Silk Icons in the past, you can find them here: http://www.famfamfam.com/lab/icons/silk/. They are pretty extensive for 'functional' type of things.
