Graphic Design Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional graphic designers and non-designers trying to do their own graphic design. It's 100% free, no registration required.

What's the standard (or is there a standard) when saving files to use dashes or underscores? Is there a big difference between the two when it comes to saving images for online (SEO)? I've worked at a few different companies and none of them were consistent.

Welcome to GD. This question would be better suited for the StackExchange devoted to Webmasters. Please check out webmasters.stackexchange.com/questions/374/… – Farray Feb 9 '12 at 22:22
I think that this is just as imperative for graphic designers to know when creating images for website developers. We, as graphic designers have to deal with file naming and organization thus me thinking this would be a relevant question for me to begin my reputation on GD. – kamalo Feb 10 '12 at 13:22
Graphic designers do need to deal with file naming conventions, but graphic designers are not the people best suited to answer questions about SEO. Likewise, if webmasters have questions about graphic design, they should ask here. Question relevance is mostly determined by which SE will provide the best answers, not so much by the occupation of the person asking. – Farray Feb 10 '12 at 17:50

There's nothing set in stone and no technical reason to use one over the other.

Use whatever works best for you. But it is helpful to always use the same thing.

There is a technical reason to use dashes/hypens and not underscores if your Google index matters... youtube.com/watch?v=AQcSFsQyct8 – Farray Feb 9 '12 at 22:27
Interesting. Thanks! Clearly, my answer sucks then! :) – Scott Feb 9 '12 at 22:29
