Graphic Design Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for professional graphic designers and non-designers trying to do their own graphic design. It's 100% free, no registration required.

This is obviously my personal oppinion by why is it the larger a company is, their logos seem to be really boring. Case in point facebook, google, zynga, tesco. I of course see the argument that they are SO big they have to A.play it safe and B.be extremly legable, usable memerable ect ect.

They go to top creative agencies to develop there identity but they can often seem like a combination of clip art and MS word.

A safe logo ticking all the usability boxs does have to be boring or ugly. So why time and time again do they end up like this.

'boring' isn't terribly descriptive and purely subjective. Can you rewrite the question to be more specific? As it is, it's not really answerable. – DA01 Jun 4 '12 at 16:51
i agree, thats why i said it s my personal opinion, im not really sure of another way to approach this, as arent all thoughts about taste / style subjective ? – sam Jun 4 '12 at 16:57
Graphic design is a mix of subjective and objective traits. The problem is that StackExchange leans more towards the objective side than the subjective side. Your question is an OK question, but not one designed well for the StackExchange format. Try making it more objective. For instance, what objective aesthetics give you the impression of 'boring'? Color use? Typography? Movement? Etc. – DA01 Jun 4 '12 at 18:00
As DA01 said, your question may have some good substance in it, but its current form is not a good fit for this site. To prevent your question from being flagged and possibly removed, avoid asking subjective questions where … it is a rant disguised as a question For more guidance, please check out blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/09/good-subjective-bad-subjective – Farray Jun 4 '12 at 20:39
One reason might be that large companies are generally older and so are their logos. – poepje Jun 8 '12 at 16:03

I personally havent come across the zynga logo enough to make a judgement on it but the logos for facebook, google and tesco are excellent from a brand recognition point of view. Like you say yourself they are extremely legable and memorable. A simple logo done well imo is always better than some fancy design with 'clever' stuff going on just for the sake of it.
