When I convert a PDF to open it in Adobe Illustrator, why are the objects in my file broken up in to many pieces?

I have a PDF file and when I turn it into an Illustrator CS5 file, the image breaks into pieces and there are spaces between the pieces. Why is this happening and how can I fix it?
