My computing experience dates back to the eighties when DOS was brand new and home machines ran on CP/M. From building my own systems I have some understanding in hardware and other complicated things but it is my believe that an OS has to be easy to use and to configure. That's why I use Ubuntu.

Do the images need to stay in .GIF, or are you open to another encoding?

@horatio: appears the way to go in PS - as far as I could find out you can only generate halftone patterns including line on separated color layers.

@Bakabaka Actually I made it using a GIMP Distort > Newsprint filter. No PS here, so I could not say what its name is (but I am pretty confident you have such a filter in PS too).

comment How to create this kinda halftone circle in Inkscape
1. Draw circle - 2. define stroke paint with the color you need 3. define mid markers DotL 4. Extensions > Modify Path > Color Markers to match Stroke to make dots the color of the stroke 5. Define stroke color A (opacity) to 0 to make it invisible 6. proceed with 4. in answer above. The "fade" effect will add transparency to the color.

Deciding on the color is the first step actually. It's in the stroke color before you do dots or clones. Only then the dot will get the stroke color on Color Markers to match Stroke. Then we can change the stroke to invisible (or else). All cloned dots will then have the initial color (which unfortunately can't be changed other than fade later).
