My computing experience dates back to the eighties when DOS was brand new and home machines ran on CP/M. From building my own systems I have some understanding in hardware and other complicated things but it is my believe that an OS has to be easy to use and to configure. That's why I use Ubuntu.

Sorry, but I can't reproduce this here... all works as expected but after painting you may have to create a new selection mask in additon to the original.

Without knowledge of the source images it appears to be a bit hard to guide you. Depending on the color range there you probably get better results using a custom palette.

Guides (+ snapping) are helpful while drawing (second approach) but AFAIK there is no function to align objects to guides after we had drawn them. Regarding the bounding box: for a straight line, its upper left corner is identical to the starting handle of a line. It should therefore align straightforward. Did you try different caps in stroke properties?
