comment Is it frowned upon as a designer if you don't use “top” software?
If you find what you need with any software or workflow to accomplish your goal in a reasonable amount of time, then in my mind there is no reason to buy or obtain the "cutting edge" versions to do the same thing. Nor is there a reason to be self conscious of the snobs who turn their nose up.

comment Is it a copyright violation to trace everyday objects and use them for commercial use?
Just like there are multiple different styles for the same icons made by different designers, there are multiple styles of buttons. You are certainly not in trouble with a button design. If you're worried it isn't unique enough, rejoice - that would make you very unlikely to get sued since others probably have variations of the design (afterall, you can only copyright to a point... I don't think the ideas of buttons can be copyrighted, for example). Honestly, I'm pretty sure that tracing your furniture for vector art will not be a problem as long as you do something to make it your own.

comment Highlight stray non-background pixels
In Paint.NET you can select the background region with the wand tool using 0% tolerance, then invert selection and deselect the foreground object manually. Sorry that I don't know Gimp well enough to answer this for real.

comment How can I arrange words into a shape to make a “word cloud” design?
You need to make searches for word clouds and word cloud generators, especially word cloud shapes. I did some groundwork but I couldn't quickly retrieve anything. You'll have to do some sifting to find what you're looking for. The closest site to your request, tagxedo, is completely exclusive. I didn't check to see if they offered a trial version or not.

comment How can I make consistent designs for similar items?
You can always use Magic Set Editor (magicseteditor.sourceforge.net), a program originally designed for creating fake (Magic: the Gathering) cards but is very flexible and has been used to create new card designs. It allows for automatic wordwrapping and scores of other small features that would make your life easier, but you need to make the card template (which is a little time-consuming).
