You're absolutely right. I'll get some samples done myself and test it, so I'll be satisfied with the end result.

Thanks @TunaMaxx. I'm wondering whether you have the ability to test frosted vinyl with cutouts on a piece of glass (of i.e. A4/Legal) size and put it against a white wall and take a photo of it?

I thought metallic vinyl would be thinner due to material used. AD#1: Can you provide some internet link to this kind of print mount, because I'm not sure I understand the process? But to add to AD#2 I suppose this would be the best possible alternative as one could use thinnest possible glass on the backside (or even Vivak) to lessen 3D effect and completely remove halo. But My metallic vinyl idea arose mainly because of the contrast hesitation I have. Can you please re-read my edited question and see if you have any additional input to your already valuable answer?

Can you please re-read my almost completely rephrased question and add anything to your already valuable answer? I may completely ditch the metallic vinyl idea if contrast can be sufficient - see my main problem.

The idea of cutting metallic first and put an uncut frosted vinyl over is a very good one. Except for the halo, you're mentioning it. The thinner the metallic vinyl the lesser the halo. AD#1: I'm not sure how'd you apply the clear adhesive to metallic and cut it afterwards? The paper on the backside makes cutting possible, as it serves as a fixed platform on which vinyl gets cut. AD#2 That's a clever idea, although these sheets of glass wouldn't be bound. I'm not sure whether that'd be an issue. This would also make an undesired 3D effect because of the distance between vinyls.

Your image of a window with cut Oracal is exactly what I'm after. But. All you can see is the frosted glass where Oracal is being applied and clear glass where is't being cut out. This works very well on windows. I'm sceptical about the effect on kitchen worktop backsplash, because glass will be very close to white wall and I'm afraid that the clear glass parts won't have enough contrast with frosted parts. That's why I would like to put metallic gold in place where clear glass should be seen and frosted everywhere else.

comment How to remove noise/grain on a picture, based on some “noise pattern”
@huzzah: Instead of copying you could easily use layer masks here and have separate noise-cancelling adjustment layers for individual mask.

comment How do you create a seamless texture in photoshop?
It is as nice as much effort you try investing into it. The better seamless transition you create the better the pattern. But I was to suggest the same...

comment How do I learn to be creative?
For start I'd suggest to read Robert Bringhurst's Elements of typographic style. Although it's a lot about typography (which is imperative for web) it has lots about design, perceptance, aesthetics etc... I call it the design bible.

comment What to do if your website design got stolen?
Can you prove that design is yours and that it was created prior to theirs website (or development)? If you go the legal way it will boil down to facts like this. Ad as a rule of thumb: don't spend time and money on something that will cost you more (in time and money) than it's actually worth.

comment What browser width should I use to design a website?
I wish I could down-vote a comment... :( But just FYI @Rizwanabbasi: scrollbars have different widths on different systems (touch devices don't even have them) and even on these systems scrollbars can be changed (Google is doing that for instance in its apps from GMail on).

comment What font is used in this picture:
I was also thinking of Baskerville, but although "g" seemed to have disjoint counter it didn't have high enough ear and "f" wasn't wide enough. So I though of tightly tracked Georgia as well. +1

@Farray: Thanks for the duplicate closing. It actually is the very same problem very well explained in the linked answer. Thank you.

Interestingly enough when I open it in Photoshop and re-save it using Save for Web and Devices and save it to 24-bit PNG its size becomes smaller by about 31%... From 14,5k to 10k.

Thanks! This obviously worked for you (likely on a Mac). But it should be pointed out that file size is now almost 3 times larger... And that is just because PNG got converted from 8-bit indexed colour to 24-bit one... As it seems.

@CasparKleijne: It opens with transparency on my machine as well, but all colors are simply dark gray (#333)... I'm sorry I invalidly refered to transparency while I should refer to colours... :)

comment What is a good question to ask a designer in the context of an interview for a website?
@AlanGilbertson: But designing for web isn't analogous to general graphic design. One has to understand browser capabilities and optimizations. When to use JPGs, GIFs or PNGs... and many many other things as well.
