How does Apple's retina display affect sub-pixel rendering? Actually, I meant whole “retina” displays regardless of the system, since such displays should begin to appear in other devices next year. As far as my knowledge goes, I agree with you about OSX stance about “hinting” :). Unfortunately, the only materials I was able to find on the matter, told about some antialiasing/subpixel rendering techniques ornamented with a hint of heuristics without giving almost any details, so it's hard for me to really say what's behind (I hate “black-box” kind of things). Effectively it can give results similar/equal to hinting without using “hinting” explicitly. |

Designing fonts About adhering to the “rules” of typography I'd like to remind a simple quote (I don't know who was the author but he/she IMHO hit the spot directly): “You can break the rules, but you can't ignore them”. These words are my design “credo” :). |

Affordable vector graphics editor My experience with these apps is slim. I mentioned them because each one have some features I found potentialy useful for my personal needs. One of the most profound is CMYK support. When it comes to Xara, its speed and some non-nonsense tools are a big pro. PrintDesign in turn is more on the “Corel” side of the world in regard to UX. It's not as complete as Inkscape, but again—it supports CMYK which is very important in my case. As to “feel” of these two compared to Illustrator, I'd say they do things differently. It's “upside down” difference, but it'll take some time to get used to it. |

Affordable vector graphics editor @alord1689 Thanks for explanation! In the case of Ill 10, I'd still use it, along with learning to use one of the free tools. |

How to change a certain color to specific other color within an image? Another thing came to my mind recently: take a look e.g. at photoshopessentials.com/photo-effects/blend-if. Instead of “selecting white” or changing layer blending mode, you can also use “Blend If” sliders in “Blending Options”. Of course “coloring” layer should be below in this case too. |

Affordable vector graphics editor Simply out of curiosity: what version are you using now? Maybe upgrade isn't really necessary? I'm using CS4 for a couple of years now and I don't feel like upgrading anytime soon. Again: I'm just curious :). |

How to change a certain color to specific other color within an image? Glad it worked for you :). Well… hassle… I think each new technique seems a bit of a hassle at first but it's becoming quite obvious in time. |

Illustrator: Change the colors of a symbol I agree with Scott's answer, however I wanted to share a little tip that I found useful more than once: you can define some “global” swatches and use them to color your symbols. Of course you can edit symbols definitions if you want to change their colors, but I found it easier (all colors to change in one palette) and safer (you won't change your symbol's shape by mistake while selecting different regions) to change only swatches definitions. |
