comment Distinguishing/important features of a face - drawing/painting
Is the sort of thing you're aiming for like this pencil portrait by Ileana Hunter (very realistic, almost photo-like in some ways, completely recognisable, but also very bare and minimalist)

Just to check: are you talking about portraits that feel realistic (i.e. not figurative cartoons or caricatures)? Because it's possible to make recognisable but not realistic images with one colour and just the eyes, mouth, hair and face shape. (also browse minimalist portraits for some of the styles people have tried)

comment Exponential/logarithmic scaling in Illustrator?
Interesting challenge! I got something that works using envelope distort with a mesh (a little bit like this, but ignore the stuff about blends, horizontal only e.g. a 1x6 grid, and scaling the grid lines outwards), and then scaling everything except the inner segment, then everything except the inner two, etc, so the grid lines are placed exponentially. But I can't get the maths quite right. How much wider should the final area be? E.g. if you start with a square, what would you want the final aspect ratio to be?

comment Why are thin webfonts so popular?
It's undoubtably true that Apple and ios7 further popularised the 'thin type' trend, but it was already an established growing trend before ios7: one of the criticisms of IOS7 from designers when it came out was that we were used to Apple leading, but here they seemed to be following (for example)

comment What’s the difference between an art director and a creative director?
I think they're pointing out that the linked article is almost identical to Gramps' answer above (which also links to the same article, "source", but it's not very prominent)

comment What exactly is a “Pixel”?
There's a small common mistake here with DPI in printing: DPI in printing is the resolution of the printer (e.g. 1200), it's PPI (pixels per inch) that is described here, see What is the difference between DPI (dots per inch) and PPI (pixels per inch)?

comment Have there been any attempts to improve the design of spreadsheets?
Here's a link to an article about an app, Grid, that attempted this in 2012. I've not heard of others though I heard the latest version of excel has had quite a makeover for touchscreens. Finally, it's an older "basic design" than the 1980s - here's a spreadsheet in Luxor Temple, Egypt! And Sumarians, too

comment Is there a series of key principles to design a simple interface for a complex application?
Big question! I'd suggest finding a copy of Universal Principles of Design and reading the sections titled Flexibility-Usability Tradeoff, Layering, Progressive disclosure, Advance organiser... then maybe browse the "see also"s

comment How to promote three different products to three different audiences in one banner?
@Lohoris I think there's a running joke in the US that (senior?) doctors spend all their time playing golf. I've seen it in comics etc. I guess it's something to do with them being well paid and managing their own appointments schedule (i.e. they can work when they want)?

comment How do I achieve the equivalent of using small caps in Arabic?
I think if I did it'd imply that I have enough relevant expertise to recommend Kufi style fonts as a good option - but I really don't, it might give off completely the wrong impression to Arabic eyes. It looks like we don't have many Arabic users here unfortunately: I'd suggest browsing Arabic calligraphy / typography styles and finding an arabic-focussed Q&A site to ask what people associate with those styles.
