comment How was this mosaic graphic of Jimi Hendrix created?
Since they are tiles, they MIGHT all be the same size, just laid out in quads. One might use some sort of ascii art program with tile-able glyphs...

@Bakabaka: can you describe the reason for such large a bleed area? Is the item being wrapped around a substrate like a canvas (etc)?

comment Is it normal to send a CMYK file without an embedded color profile?
Does it matter? Additionally, how do you know the printer did not automagically force all color management to a specific profile on their end?

I believe "yes" you are correct. The point is to use a single display profile for the CMYK but to not store it in the file. My point here is to have your display be trustworthy with respect to output. Decent printers have a well-calibrated and regulated workflow to the point that many are consistent.

I only quickly corrected the perspective of the image. The detail differences that you refer to are caused by the obvious warp and skew of the image, not to mention the choice of AA and the difference in rendering engine.

It looks identical to me

In the photos in article I linked in the comments above, the "4' is closed. I looked again at the video and I see no "4" at all in the interface. Can you provide a video time stamp of a specimen?

It is common in music circles to hear things like "Its not 'practice makes perfect,' but 'perfect practice makes perfect'". My first thought on this was "but imperfect practice makes style"

comment What Color Theory goes into designing camouflage?
This is off topic IMO, but camo focuses on contrast, not color. Shape, color, texture, movement. Context.

comment How does pixel hinting work?
In the second paragraph of that section, it suggests "[...]if the user agent can determine the size of a px unit from its environment, it should use that value; otherwise, it should choose an appropriate size for one px unit" Its complicated

comment How does pixel hinting work?
@da01: I agree in the general sense, but SVG files are essentially unitless and the pixel grid alignment presupposes a specific screen size see for instance Illustrator help file "The crisp appearance of pixel-aligned strokes is maintained in the raster output at a resolution of 72-ppi only. For other resolutions, there is a high possibility of such strokes producing anti-aliased results." The only reason I am being pedantic here is because the question is asking about the underlying reasons and so I think it is reasonable nitpicking.

comment Should I use capital letters (titlecase) when using small caps?
If you have no special small-caps font, then "lower case" small caps is just uppercase letters rendered at ~75% of the selected point size. I think that it is best to use any "all caps" styling feature in software: you leave the text in the appropriate title case and then style it with all caps.

comment Where can I get colored pencils for custom palette?
a decent art supply store probably has colored pencils in loose form (ie not in a kit of 64 etc). One problem with hex colors is that they are RGB which is a different color model than anything pigment based, so their assertion of similarity is probably no better than yours

comment How does pixel hinting work?
No, but I think it is crucial to understanding what is going on. Pixel hinting as represented in the OP's example relies on the assumption that the pixel grid will be the same on random client machines. This is not a safe assumption. (but may be true 80% of the time)

comment How does pixel hinting work?
It is important for the OP understand that there is no such thing as a half-pixel. A pixel is the smallest unit of memory used to store image data (even for vectors, since at this stage, the vector has been rendered to a pixel grid for output or display).

comment Select same pixels across all images and delete/make transparent them
I don't really know, but if you were to, say find a very dark corner or room in the game and then take a screencap, that might serve as a universal mask without much tweaking

That may be true, but it does do it.
