comment Difference between kerning vs letter spacing?
After designing my first few business cards/brochures, I sort of stumbled upon the power of kerning. It makes a huge difference.

@Daniel Certainly more realistic, but perhaps realism isn't always the best thing to shoot for. It's artsy, but perhaps not as functional. Glad you like it, though. :p

comment Photoshop CS5: Setting a black background to transparent
Out of curiosity, is there a way to do this if the picture isn't grayscale? Maybe do the same, and then making a copy of the original layer, applying it with "Color" blending mode?

+1 for "looking at examples." Oh, and steampunk is awesome!

comment Title text color for header
I was thinking yellow myself. If you wanted to do white, I'd darken up the foreground gray a bit and lose 50% of the saturation on the blue. I guess it depends on whether or not you want the text to go over both the buildings and the sky, or just the sky.

I thought about doing a Spherize too, but the problem with it is that it's going to distort the text pretty badly. I'll edit my answer to show the distortion.

Dunno... seems pretty self-explanatory to me. It's possible that I missed a step in there, seeing as how I wrote it all down before actually doing it... but I've read over it even after doing it, and it seems like it should work just fine.

comment Problem with colors when uploading images to Facebook
You should upload it to FB, take a screenshot with the "Print Screen," "Prt Scr," etc. button on your keyboard, paste it into photoshop/GIMP/etc, save it, and then upload it to imageshack to show us what exactly is going wrong.

Can this be easily animated? I've never worked with Photoshop's new 3D features.

comment When is mentioning a trademark necessary?
I contacted a major advertisement printer, and they told me that I didn't need any fine print... that just (R) was fine. Since they probably print about 50 different brochures a day (at perhaps an average of 2k each run,) and they saw an exact copy of my brochure, I'm trusting their experience, seeing as how they gave it to me in writing. It seems as though it does indeed boil down to the "likelihood of confusion" that the harvard.edu link talks about.

Unfortunately, since I know nothing about the legality of any of this, I am in doubt about everything, so I'm afraid your answer doesn't help me very much. :P

Very cool, but it was only a hypothetical example. I also found this: cyber.law.harvard.edu/metaschool/fisher/domain/tm.htm , which, like the Microsoft page, mainly focuses on whether or not you are attempting to trick the consumer into believing that your product is endorsed by the trademark owner.

FWIW, it wasn't me that downvoted you... lol... apparently someone out there disagrees with using AE for this type of video... wish we had their input on the matter, but they just left us with up/down votes and no comments. :P

Not sure how the single quote got in there... good eye!

I'm assuming that you're talking about "warrantee" instead of "warranty." Could've sworn I changed that... very odd! I'm stumped on the punctuation error, though. :) "golf-ball-sized hail"?

What's too big? They're normal 3.5x2 business cards... lol!

comment Making a business card. Any advice?
Unfortunately, in order to recommend that the other guy take advice from this thread, I had to edit this question in order to include the bit about bleed (I changed the the 3.5x2 design dimensions to 3.75x2.25.) In doing so, I bumped the question, even though I have had my business cards for about a month now. Will still +1 ya for the glossy/pen advice, though. :)

I'm using printplace.com since they are HQ'd very nearby. Not sure about any of the printer spec details, but they definitely recommend 300 DPI.

I edited the original question to include a picture of the final result of the resized picture.

comment What's the best way to print a mostly black 8.5“ x 11” page?
Do small-scale offset printers really take jobs in the 1,000 copies range? I've always thought of offset printing as something done for big jobs. I searched for nearby offset printers in google and contacted two companies -- one by phone (they said their brochures would have a border, so that's not offset printing, right? Like I said, though, that can be easily taken care of with a guillotine cutter) and one via their web site's "Request a Quote" form.
