Thanks for the great and very detailed answer, TomUnderhill. Unfortunately e100's right... I'm asking about changes to DPI/PPI where the pixel dimensions remain the same. I've edited the question. Sorry for any confusion.

comment What are the standard sizes for social sharing buttons?
+1 on this. I think 16, 24, and 32 + Retina @2x versions of those would cover it.

comment How to get this look in photoshop?
Which part of the image's look do you want to replicate? It just looks like a black and white image with high contrast so the shadow regions are completely black. Convert to greyscale then using Levels will do that in Photoshop.

comment is it mandatory to keep 72 dpi for web design? What if I create in 200dpi?
Sorry, but I think it's very important for answers on Stack Exchange to be as correct as possible, due the volume of traffic they can receive. This is especially true for answers that have been marked correct or answer that have a lot of up votes. I've expanded the discussion here: graphicdesign.stackexchange.com/questions/13855/…

That's not true. If the documents are the same pixel dimensions, the gradients will be bit-for-bit identical. Dithering is a pixel based operation. The document's DPI tag has no effect on it.

Where/how/why do gradients change? (Maybe we should discuss this elsewhere? The document DPI/PPI is just a tag.

Gradients are fine, it's all about the way Photoshop handles layer styles and how appearance changes as you copy or move elements between documents — it scales them according to document DPI (which is a smart move, but means you have to be very careful). If you're designing for web, the best option is to set everything to 72DPI, always.

Great reply. One minor point, if that's ok: “It doesn't make any difference what ppi setting you use for web images” — Definitely true for the images themselves, but occasionally it can matter for the tools (please see my reply).
