Branding and UX designer. Obsessive typophile. Color theory junkie. I spend my days mediating the treaty between logic and creativity.

comment Strange type behaviours, some rounded letters seem larger
That's a darn good question. I've never tried.

comment What's the pixel dimensions of a powerpoint slide for Open Office / Libre Office Impress?
As e100 pointed out above, thankfully you can choose the aspect ratio now. You can actually create the image to fit the screen. Personally, I just use Google Presentations now anyway.

comment What wire-framing tool can I use that is focused on Android and iOS apps?
"Free" is often not "best". Have you looked into Axure? It's a solid wireframing and lo-fi prototyping tool. If you need to do mockups, I'd go with Illustrator, Fireworks, or (if you must stay free) Inkscape.

comment How reliable are the colour blindness previews in Illustrator and Photoshop?
But the question remains, did Adobe create a scientifically accurate model?

I don't know specifically about Adobe's implementation, but there is scientific data available on how the perception of the color spectrum is deficient with various forms of color blindness. I would hope that Adobe incorporated that data.

"TCO on a Mac is lower than a PC." -- especially when you factor in emotional health ;)

Agreed. I'm not patient enough but I know a lucky few who have been.

On the other hand, if you can get in as an approved vendor with a govt agency you might just find a cash cow :) Then you've got to suck it up and RFP your brains out.

I've coached more than a few start ups and small businesses through the rationale for finding a long-term partner over asking vendors to bid. It doesn't always take but when it does, you've found a great client.

There are Mac fanboys and Mac haters. Then there are the rest of us who can see straight @foamcow ;)

Depending on the model, market, and upgrades 300-600 USD. My current one is the last matte 17" so it's holding better than normal.

For the record, I've opened up every Mac laptop (and tower) I've owned to upgrade one piece or another. Usually around the 3 to 4 year point when upgrades become worthwhile. If you're moderately competent with small tools, it's no less viable than opening a big brick-size PC laptop.

My Macs usually last me about 5 years with a few upgrades to memory and possibly a faster HDD along the way.
