comment Constructing a tile from 4 pieces - to create single entity of adjacent letters in a word game
I will try to adapt your bevel effect (will need more pieces, though)... thanks

I still think that's possible with 4 pieces: if you imagine all adjacent letters like being drawn on yellow paper, with corners being curved up (with small corner shadows).

I understand what you suggest (doing shadows and effects in code), but would like to go the opposite way (every asset pre-rendered as much as possible).

Because I'd like to form a single entity (like hot lead) of the adjacent letter tiles placed at the game board. If you look at the popular app Words with Friends they do similar stuff, but out of 9 or more tile-pieces...

This suggested bevel is a great visual effect, but I probably won't be able to use it with square.png - if you look for example at the corner made of the letters P, I, T in the app screenshot...

Have you done this in InkScape? Do you cut a rectangle inside - and then move it down and to the right?

+1 and thank you for this great answer, but I am still curious - what happened to my rectangle after I have applied the Drop Shadow filter to it. I have tried Selecting All in All Layers (the single layer in my Inkscape document is unlocked) and then Ungroup - but nothing happens. I was hoping to ungroup rectangle and shadow and then move them a bit to the top-left - to get rid of the unwanted padding manually.

Your suggestion to enable "Snap nodes or handles" made my editing job much easier :-)

+1 thanks for the great answer. However I've tried exporting bitmap in Inkscape as a 240 x 240 area - it is nearly impossible (always resets and exports wrong area), at least on Mac. I will try Windows soon.

No, I actually wondered about how to do it manually, while editing the SVG file in Inkscape. Drop shadow filter has added padding around the rectangle - so I wonder how to get rid of it at top and left.
