@Ooker: if you're still interested, I finally published my list of books I keep around: justinthrelkeld.github.io/designbooks — feel free to contact me via other channels if you have questions (before this gets too terribly off-topic).

@MichaelLai you mean an overview of the variations that are possible within various letterforms/characters? So something to expand on my first paragraph where I say, "...there are only so many variations on the basic form"

@Ooker The Non-designer's Design Book is an alright resource too. Though it's much more general and basic than CMoS. I had it assigned during one of my university courses and ended up selling it because it wasn't as useful as other books. If you'd like, I can point you to a list of the books I keep on my shelf and a summary of why I keep them around.

@MichaelLai I finished revisiting DWR and didn't find the essay I was thinking of. Laws of the Letter (pp. 53 - 61) discusses the properties of typefaces and how various type has evolved over time, which might be quite relevant.

This question isn't off topic as it stands now. It relates to typesetting and manuscript preparation, which graphic designers should be familiar with.

I couldn't find a better source for the CMoS rule, but the book should be freely available in the reference section of most libraries, though I highly recommend purchasing it if you intend to set any amount of text in a semi-professional manner.

@MichaelLai it's quite possible that the "font family tree" is nearly limitless when you consider technical aspects like kerning, ligatures, and format. For example, look at the number of available versions of Caslon. There's book of essays, Design Writing Research, that I vaguely feel I might have something on the topic. I'll read through it again and let you know if if find anything relevant.
