comment Is it possible to modify a rounded rectangle's radius in Photoshop?
@Littlemad: This is a perfectly reasonable question. Just because you can delete it and start over doesn't mean you shouldn't search for a quicker way of doing it.

comment Do I need to license fonts included with my OS?
@Philip: I don't understand what this has to do with the public good argument or the USPTO (the decision was made by congress not the USPTO). Obviously distributing the font file itself requires a license, but not all uses of fonts require distributing the font file. Non-print users often don't need to distribute the font. And even for print, you can outline the font and avoid distributing the font itself. Similarly, most major font foundries allow the distribution of font files to intermediaries like commercial printers, making this a moot point.

The thing is, in the U.S. it was decided that, for the public good, typefaces can't be copyrighted, only the files themselves, which would be treated as software. So technically, any font you get your hands on legally can be used for any purpose you want so long as you don't redistribute the font file. This makes many of the license terms that font authors prescribe unenforceable. For instance, the "for personal use only" clause many free fonts come with would only be legally binding if you were trying to redistribute the font. You can in fact use the font for a commercial project legally.

comment How to create Illustrations and Art from Sketches in Adobe Illustrator
@Trippy: If you can already draw well with your tablet then just open up Illustrator, select the pencil tool, and start drawing like that. If you set up a pressure-sensitive brush like in the video I linked to, you'll be all ready to start making basic vector art with dynamic line weights. Then just experiment with different ways of coloring your artwork using gradients and gradient meshes.

What kind of graphic design do you do? That can have a huge impact on your workflow. Is it print design? If so, what kind of print items?

comment Is “in the style of” an IP infringement?
@jawns317: Trademark/IP law is a really sticky area of law. The laws are intentionally poorly defined to allow room for interpretation, but this usually just means whoever has the best lawyers wins. So it may still be risky, but technically you would be within your legal rights to describe your product using someone else's trademark if it's "unavoidable".

Yep, this is true in the U.S. There is a clause in trademark law that says you can use trademarks in a product name if it's required in order to describe that product. That's why unauthorized biographies, exposes, training manuals, critiques, etc. are all able to use trademarked names/titles in their own titles.

comment How important is the visual flow of an interface?
I'm not sure what you mean by leading line in the context of a user interface. Usually that term is used in relation to photography where the image itself contains visual lines for the user to follow. User interfaces aren't images, and the eye tends to follow the logical layout of the interface (e.g. the flow of text: scanning left to right, top to bottom) rather than any geometric lines found in the interface.

I see. Yea, I suppose it's good to learn how to work with bezier curves manually first. That's how I learned. But I also think it's important for serious designers to get a tablet and get accustomed to using the tablet as soon as possible. That's one of the things I wish I'd done sooner rather than later. As it does take a while to get really proficient at drawing with a tablet without looking at your hand.

comment How to Take the Edge Off Mandatory Double-Spacing
@Littlemad: If you meant a visual example of a nicely typewritten report, I haven't been able to find a good picture, as most are low-quality scans. Also the subtle details you get from a typewriter or using high quality stationery is hard to capture in photos, but I'll post a picture if I come across a good example.

There are different vector drawing techniques. Plotting out points is not necessarily the best or most efficient way to draw. And you can certainly use the mouse to draw, but most people find it much easier to draw with a pen, especially if you're using the pencil tool (much faster than plotting out individual points and using the convert tool on each one) and are using pressure sensitivity to alter your line weight.

@Littlemad: I can't find any good examples, but these are similar: envelopperinc.com/mm5/elements/prese_1.jpg . You should be able to find them at a stationery or office supply store.

comment How to find a texture for a background image for website?
Are you asking for a list of sites where you can download any kind of texture backgrounds? Or are you asking us to find you a background texture like the one you posted? The first question can be answered by googling "background textures" or going to any stock art site. The second isn't appropriate for this site.
