Epilogue: Illustrator gremlins had messed up my coastline, making it a group of several lines instead of one solid closed line, even though that's how I drew it. You would never guess it was split by just looking at it or selecting it. I only found this out by looking at the layers. I replaced the offending sections and it worked perfectly. So the moral of the story is to always check the layers window for funny business.

Alright, for whatever reason I can't particularly fathom, this works on every other land mass I try, just not this particular one. This line is on top and the coastline is on the bottom. Using outline mode I was able to eliminate some "glitches" (loops, cusps, etc) that may have contributed to the problem but alas nothing. I'll accept your answer anyways.

Thanks for the answer, but for whatever reason this doesn't work. When I highlight the path and and divide objects below, the path just disappears and some miscellaneous objects are highlighted. The object does not get split. See here
