@plainclothes I'm sorry but you're talking nonsense. Helvetica was not derived from Clarendons, period. It was designed from scratch for a very specific reason - legibility and is characterised by a very large x height to ascender/descender ratio - about as far from Clarendons as you can possibly get.

It's almost impossible to give you any specific advice on this without knowing and understanding what it is you're trying to achieve and why bold/italic is not suitable. Underscoring words, reverse blocking them in black or grey or white on black are all options, but what are you trying to achieve?

@plainclothes Yes please do some digging because Helvetica was designed from scratch as a completely new font. It was not derived from Clarendons at all. That's like saying sans serif (without serifs) were descended from serif fonts which clearly isn't the case at all.
