@Scott I do realize that it is a 100 year old painting, hence the wording of the question for a "close approximation". I was simply looking for something close to it and the standard tools failed.

@joonas I've seen some custom fonts designed to reproduce logos or specific passages of text. I was hoping something like that existed here.

@jenna I tried the standard tools like whatthefont, but they a poor job of OCR on every letter except the n. If this question is not suited for this site I'll take it down, the FAQ seems to indicate that it is ok

@Wrzlprmft The tips (gentle shading, stay away from 100% black) were useful for a graphic design novice like myself even if the final product doesn't quite look like Henrik's example.

@Wrzlprmft You're right, there isn't any information, labeling or scale on this picture. I wanted to concentrate the question on the visual design as this is the focus of this particular site. In the spirit of Stack Exchange I tried to create a minimal working example. It may be, as you indicate, too minimal.

@Wrzlprmft yes, though I'm not sure what alternative you are suggesting.

Thanks for the tips, the drawings look better already! I use Inkscape, but I'm sure there is an equivalent method to copy a look.

@occulus All circles are ellipses, but not all ellipses are circles. He is saying that the path is elliptical, which for some cases is circular.

@Bakabaka Agreed about the logos, but they sufficed to illustrate the question. I'm writing a small piece of custom software on Linux, and I don't have access to Illustrator. This is more of a general question of graphic design about the shapes of these paths. Ugly or not, they are quite common.

This will work - fonts.com has a "category" and tag section. I can use that to pull some information. Thanks!
