I own a short-run publishing company with in-house digital printing that specializes in memoirs and hard-bound heirloom books. I sweep the floors and handle our IT needs. My passion for computers has grown since my first exposure to a friend's TI99/4A so many years ago. Over the years I have professionally dabbled in graphic design (Illustrator), photo retouching (Photoshop and Pixelmator), page layout (InDesign), web design (text editors and Coda for PHP, SASS and some other programming tools), MySQL, high-quality color correct digital printing via Fiery,

To me, interface design, programming, graphic design, printed items, websites, ebooks are all just facets of good ole fashioned communication. Done well, the communication medium should be invisible, allowing the message to stand firm. When designing and creating heirloom books for publication, I look for rules-based execution balanced with elegance and flair, breaking rules when appropriate for the message and medium.

comment How should I handle vector artwork and images for street pole-sized ads?
Thanks for letting me know it worked! As a Mac user, I'm often frustrated by the Adobe apps, but the cross-platform consistency helps. On the Mac world, the operating system builds all the visual elements with a subset of PDF, so exporting to PDF and I are best friends... A quick note of clarification: I export to/save as PDF in InDesign and Illustrator, but save to tif (for layered files), jpg (for opaque files) or png (for transparent backgrounds) in Photoshop.

comment How to make a logo where a letter is made of particles of varying sizes?
Not only do I earn my living with "graphic design", most things I design (most non-designers would say "make" or "print") receive big "wow!" responses, especially when compared to what the non-designers make in Word with crappy clip-art. My designs take significantly longer than their Word-made stuff because I typically modify everything I use. I might require "twice as long" to design something, and that is significant to them. They make their stuff in ten minutes, my designs take "significantly" longer.

Not a problem... As I read your question I had a chance to think through an issue facing me with a long gradation in web application.

Are you building an internal-only "web portal" site, or an external, customer-facing "products and services" site?
