By day, I am the Director of Publishing Technology at Jones & Bartlett Learning. I spend most of my time in Xcode and Applescript.

At night, I am a degree candidate at Harvard University, Extension School working towards a Bachelor of Liberal Arts with a concentration in Computer Science.

The rest of the time, such as it is, I futz around with my website, Oatmeal & Coffee.

comment InDesign: How do I automatically style body text differently depending on the prior paragraph style?
Do you mean automatically? Otherwise, this is a really basic question that is off-topic.

comment Any ideas on how to fill a blank sidebar?
I'm leaving this open. It isn't asking what to do with the site in general, but a specific area of the site. The question has led to an unexpected but valid theme: put the white space down and back away slowly.

comment How to manually identify a font when the automatic services fail?
@e100: That is so cool. Too bad it is sold out (at least there). I've seen other type specimen books elsewhere, but they all look to be outdated. The book that I have was killed, more or less, by a particular type company who shall not be named because of rights issues.

comment Are there some standard sizes when it comes to square page layouts?
Spiral binding might (and most likely will) require the catalog to be shrink-wrapped or packaged before shipping. Definitely speak to your local postal rep or a packaging company.

Pardon some reminiscing...When I first started doing desktop publishing, I found at a second-hand bookstore a specimen book that was a comprehensive catalog of what were then the current digital fonts sold by the major type companies. It included complete displays of every character in every weight and style at 12 pt. That book went with me to every job I ever had for over a decade, pulled my butt out of the fire countless times, and survived a few theft attempts. I don't think anyone could make that book again, what with rights and OpenType being so robust. It sits on my bookshelf even today.

comment What to do to polish a website design?
You got one answer over the course of two days. Given the performance of other questions here, that's really not that good. For discussion about the scope and intent of the site, please read the FAQ and related discussions on meta. At the same time, in order to improve the chances of getting answers to your questions, you need to accept more answers. If you focus your question to a specific aspect of your site, I will re-open it. Otherwise, the question is too general as it stands now, as @Jack made clear early on.

This is too broad a question despite best attempts. If the question were more specific to layout or color scheme., I think that would be fine. But just a general, overall question isn't going to really work here.

comment How to convert a high number of PNG images to JPG forcing the background color?
@Jack: That would be a matter of debate in these parts. Photoshop is popular, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best.

You got it. I work for a publishing company and even with our vast resources, we still have the same problem and perform the same solution. Good luck!

Right. This is why you need the source file or have one remade.

Yes. Layouts = source file. If you own the content, then I suggest having it rekeyed and re-done. Editing a PDF is an unpredictable action that really doesn't help over the long term.

There is a lot in this question, and normally it would be closed, but I think it is a result of not understanding what can and cannot be done with a PDF. I'm leaving this open.

comment Recoloring .eps files
@carlpett: It seems hced is correct here. I looked into the scripting APIs and Illustrator doesn't offer access to the Pantone libraries to add the Pantone colors to the swatch (and so forth). Time to put in the iPod and tuck in for some work.
