Oh, I accept fully that I suck at UX. But in order to change my current perceptions with new ones, I need to understand why they are wrong. I can't just tell myself "my fonts don't look good because a pro designer said so". That's not learning. I rather need a good explanation as to what exactly I did wrong, and WHY I got it wrong, before I can adopt a new way of looking at things. I'm not "defending", just trying to understand..

Thanks so much for the specific tips! They're of great help. And btw, I did get someone (a freelancer) to create my logo for me :)

And as for displaying unclickable links.. Doesn't it help users understand what they'll be able to do after they'll register? And last thing- suggesting I should add "create quiz" button prove your point that my site doesn't convey the message - users can't really create quizzes, they just add questions, and the site itself creates the quizzes for them..

Wow, those are some great comments there :). I would like to mention though that you're comparing landing pages of other sites with content pages of my site (I probably should've mentioned that in the question). Had I put my landing page on.. You designers wouldn't be so patient about my design, to say the least. But you gave me some great ideas on how to improve my landing page! Second, my login is just like this site's login (and just like this site I have a scoring scheme, and the login bar turns into "Oren A. such and such score and medals..."), so I'm not sure about that..

... But hey, we write great code :). As for the frameworks, though I looked at many sites, I'll have a look at those as well, Thanks.

I think you implied to the crux of it - The feeling. I've looked at many sites, and in my eyes my design isn't very different from theirs. I guess I'm just missing "the feel" of how it'll all look nice together. Which makes me kinda lose hope :( :). I can play with the colors all day, and still won't know which fit best... Maybe looking more into other sites, and trying to get the "feel" of how colors fit with each other will help. As a side note though, the colors I picked were intended to fit with the logo (blue and yellow). I guess that didn't work :) I get the feeling yellow is.. too loud

Thanks a lot for your comment! It's very educative! I'd like to reply though :) 1. It's an eLearning site, I thought about a design close to Wikipedia's. So it's not "backoffice", but I wanted it to be plain and simple. Did I take it too far? :) 2. That's exactly what I tried to do! the logo is blue and yellow, and so is just about everything I had to select colors for! Doesn't it show? 3. That's a great tip! Should all items with background be with a similarly shaped background?? Lastly, I replied to @thebodzio as well :) you can check it out if you like :). Thanks!

Thanks for your answer. I find it very unfortunate though, that everyone likes your answer, it says exactly what the books say, and I STILL DON'T GET IT! as you probably noticed my site is about eLearning. I don't get how there are "landmarks" and "leads" in Wikipedia for example, or this site, but not in mine. I have a (completely standard) left navigation bar, upper login bar, an obvious headline, and ordered information within the page. What is more standard, obvious and ordered than that? How is this so difficult? Btw, since one page might be confusing,I added another printscreen.tnx again
