It's not good practice if it does not resemble real work: it's just an exercise, like fighting a straw man. If it's exercises you want, your time would be better spent on tutorials and challenges to gain skills and techniques you don't yet have, rather than throwing existing skills and techniques into the ether (Unless it's a deserving cause or involves genuine useful feedback)
