Feb 24, 2016 at 2:07 comment added fenomas Generator is not what you're making it out to be. It's simply an extension mechanism that makes it easier to work with external libraries and the local file system and so on. Generator does not let you do anything special with PS itself - layers, smart objects, pixels, etc - things like that can only be done in ExtendScript (the engine that's been in PS for 20 years or whatever). If you have any questions about this I'm happy to answer via SO's chat thingy. (With that said it's true that my effect can probably be done with ExtendScript.. but it'd be a huge pain to do :( )
Feb 24, 2016 at 0:08 comment added kenjikato @fenomas at this point I don't think you are going to be able get the effect you are trying to achieve without creating a Generator plugin. The Generator architecture will let you do what you want as it was designed to work with Smart Objects, were as Photoshop Actions and Scripting system won't let you access a Smart Object dynamically beyond the RGB channels (no masks for alpha channel) other than what's already been outlined. At this point I'd say either embrace the Generator architecture, or follow an old school path. Otherwise I don't see a way to achieve what you are trying to do.
Feb 23, 2016 at 12:29 comment added fenomas I'm familiar with writing Generator plugins and this question doesn't concern them - I'm just trying to apply effects to a layer. I'm saving out the results via Generator, but my question would be the same if I wasn't. (Note that I'm writing the output with the built-in "Generate > Image Assets" feature, not a custom plugin like in Tom's article.)
Feb 23, 2016 at 11:09 comment added kenjikato I will also add that you can run the Action I created on a Smart Object when you open the master Photoshop file that contains the Smart Objects. Photoshop lets you trigger Actions automatically at the opening, closing or saving of a file.

Added a an ADDITION that this answer might not solve the clarified question.
Feb 23, 2016 at 10:55 comment added kenjikato @fenomas because you're using the newer Photoshop Generator feature (which I didn't see in your original question when I wrote my answer) things get complicated. The only way I believe you can achieve what you want, with the Generator feature is to write the code to create your own Generator plugin. Generators are their own special case in Photoshop, and while cool, mean that some of the classic automation techniques are harder to take advantage of. I'd suggest reading up on scripting a Generator plugin (for example tomkrcha.com/?p=3896), and adding that to the question title.
Feb 22, 2016 at 12:30 comment added fenomas All I'm looking for is a way to have Photoshop apply the effect automatically as the SO layer changes - i.e. the difference between manually performing an adjustment vs. making an adjustment layer so that the same adjustment gets applied dynamically. Are you saying there's a way to make a saved action get applied that way? If so I think that would sort me out.
Feb 22, 2016 at 7:57 comment added kenjikato @fenomas I was under the impression from your question you were looking for an alternative to Threshold. Give that you are OK with Threshold, then you could just replace Threshold in the Photoshop Action, and get the same result. The bigger point I was trying to make is that if you want to automate the process without editing inside the smart object you need the mask as AAGD stated. This was also an attempt to create a systematic batch executable action, so you wouldn't need to do anything manually.
Feb 22, 2016 at 2:00 comment added fenomas It's nice of you to provide such a detailed answer, but if one is using manual steps then @AAGD's answer already does what I need without needing to blend against white. Also note that doing a threshold with "levels" leaves a few in-between pixels - better to use image > adjustments > threshold.
