I used LiveTrace on a raster image and saved it as AI in CMYK with Working CMYK: U. S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 as the color profile. Then I save it as SVG, and save it back as AI, and change the color mode to CMYK and the color profile to the same Working CMYK: U. S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2. I check that the hex specification of the color of an area is the same, e.g. 333333 for the dark grey area below the black in the images below. And yet the gray appears different with the same hex color and the same color profile.

The first image is the PNG export of the document saved as AI, the next is the PNG export of the same document saved as SVG, then back to AI with the same color mode and profile:

The original AI file is 1.2MB, the one saved from SVG is 250KB, which I understand is due to embedding color swatches and color profiles in the original file.

I am running macOS Mojave 10.14.6 and Adobe Illustrator CS5 15.1.0.

Why do the colors appear different?
