Hi and welcome to GDSE. Your question is hard to answer. When you say "resolution", do you mean pixel dimensions or ppi? What do you mean by "18x24"? Inches? If you are making prints at a certain physical size, you should make a document with those physical dimensions. Don't think in pixels. If your artwork is vector based (which I assume it is since you are using Illustrator) resolution doesn't matter. Export a PDF in the end and the artwork will be as sharp as the printer is capable of. Focus on the print version first. You can always export an image for web later. – Wolff Dec 22 '20 at 20:56

Always design for the highest necessary output - in most instances that's print. One can always create lower resolution images (i.e. web images) from from high quality images - the revers is almost never true. – Scott Dec 22 '20 at 21:01
  • I am taking a class on graphic design and as an assignment I have to create three 18 x 24 inch theater posters in illustrator that will be printed but will also be viewed on a wed site, for each step I have to answer questions and the first question is what is the best resolution for this type of project? I don't feel that they have adequately explained that in this course and i am not sure how to answer the question. – Kelly Goforth Dec 22 '20 at 21:59

Well, technically, I sort of gave you the answer in my previous comment. – Scott Dec 22 '20 at 22:06
