mouse jumps around when zoomed in using pen tool illustrator cs6

Question

When I am zoomed in and using the pen tool I often find that if I go slightly off the zoomed in section it will then propel my mouse to another point on the artboard. Is there any way to work around this or change in the preferences? As I often find I will get this happening every time Im trying to click and drag with the pen tool.
