I often happen to stumble upon these types of artwork on Instagram. I want to remake it, but I don't know what these are called.

1.) What do you call this art style? 2.) How do you make them?

  • Several things are going on here. I don't think it has a name. First you make a grayscale (or just neutral RGB) image with a collage of several images melting into each other. Adjust Levels, Contrast etc. to get the right look. Seems like some noise of some kind was added (hard to tell in such low resolution). Perhaps use Filter > Liquify or Filter > Distort > Displace to make that wobbly, mirror-like distortion. In the end apply Gradient Map to get the coloring. Search for these things individually on this site. Would become a very long answer if all these steps should be explained.

  • Here are some links to answers I made which might inspire you. Adjusting levels: 1. Displacement Map: 1, 2. Noise: 1, 2. Gradient Map: 1. And there are lots of other brilliant answers from other users.
