So when I drag select copy Note label (i) is selected

and paste I get

I don't like the large rectangle background covering my figure

  • You work with imported EPS files, I guess. I'm afraid this is only the beginning of a series of weird happenings. Other file formats may well have structures that Inkscape interprets in a wrong way or ignores, One can call it bug in the format conversion procedure. I have got obscure results often when trying to paste things to Inkscape from other programs, to open PDFs or simply to open a SVG which is made in another program. Try to ungroup and delete the unwanted part. You can also select unwanted item in a group in the Objects panel and press DEL.
