Why do we still use points as a type measurement?

I'm in the UK, which uses metric for pretty much everything now except road distances and beer (obviously best kept apart).

Page sizes have been metric here and in most of the rest of the world for many years.

So can anyone explain why text sizes are still always measured in points (72 to the inch)?
